“Can my whole team use this Excel app at the same time?” The honest answer used to be not really, or yes, but it will take days of VBA work.
That changed. Using Claude, you can take an existing Excel workbook and convert it into a fully working multi user app in a matter of minutes. No database, no server, no add in. Just one sentence typed into Claude and a shared folder to sync through.
Why This Solves a Real Problem
Two people cannot safely edit the same macro enabled Excel workbook at once. Microsoft’s co-authoring tools help with plain spreadsheets, but they were not built for workbooks full of VBA and custom forms, and they only run on newer versions of Excel. That leaves a gap for anyone who already has a working single user app and now needs a whole team inside it.
What the Conversion Actually Does
The process uses a Claude skill built for this: excel-share-sync. Drag your workbook into Claude, type one instruction such as “please convert this app to a multi user app,” and Claude does the rest.
- No database, no server, no add in. The backend is a shared Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive folder.
- Works on any version of Excel, even 2007. This is the detail Microsoft’s own sharing tools cannot match.
- Your workbook stays intact. Sheets, tables, formatting, buttons, and existing macros come back exactly as they were, with a multi user layer added on top.
How It Works
- One instruction. Type your request paired with
/excel-share-sync. No prompt engineering needed. - Claude confirms first. It checks the exact data ranges, the key column, and how any settings sheets should behave before building anything, which is why the sync lands on the right data.
- The multi user layer gets built. A visible Multi User Login sheet handles login, logout, add user, and sync, backed by a hidden sheet managing the user list.
- Small text files carry the sync. Each user works from their own copy. A change writes out as a small text file with who changed it and the new value, which lands in each teammate’s folder and gets applied automatically. Nobody opens the same file at once, so there is nothing to lock. Deleting a record clears it instead of removing the row, which keeps everyone’s data lined up.
Proven on Two Different Apps
A Modern CRM app was converted in just a few minutes. An Employee Manager app took about six. Same one sentence prompt, same skill, two very different apps working as full multi user tools by the end.
Why It Matters for Client Work
Any single user workbook already in your library can go through this same conversion, turning what used to be a multi day custom build into a standard upgrade you can hand a client.
